tim mcTen McGraw: Your 10th album is released. Your show sells out in three minutes. And the governor names a day in your honor. Who are you? Tim McGraw, of course, whose intimate concert at Chicago’s Joe’s Bar Tuesday (10/20) celebrated the release of Southern Voice. Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn requested “If You’re Reading This” and McGraw’s Tracy Lawrence collaboration “Find Out Who Your Friends Are” as he presented Tim a plaque for the state’s first Tim McGraw Day. During “Real Good Man,” Tim didn’t miss a beat as he signed a plethora of items including clothes, CDs and a woman’s shoulder (which was permanently tattooed within an hour of the show’s conclusion).

Tim’s wife Faith Hill also got a kiss from her husband during closer “My Best Friend” as Blackhawks’ players Patrick Sharp and Adam Burish, The Bachelorette’s Jillian Harris and the Chicago Cubs’ Randy Wells looked on. “It was a great night,” one attendee tells us. “It’s been awhile since I’ve seen Tim in an arena, but this show definitely had all the energy of an arena show!” Audience members each took home a copy of Southern Voice for their $50 admission, which benefited Tim’s Neighbor’s Keeper Foundation. Review here. While in the Windy City, McGraw also taped an episode of PBS’ Soundstage to air at a later date.

Um, its not what you think! Heee Heee …I gotcha!

Taylor Justin Time: She’s covered “What Goes Around … ” in concert, but Taylor Swift was the first to get everyone out of their seats at Saturday’s (10/16) second annual Justin Timberlake & Friends Concert benefiting Shriners Hospitals for Children. Emcee/headliner Timberlake jokingly assured the Las Vegas crowd that security would take down anyone who tried to interrupt her set, which included “You Belong With Me,” “Love Story” and “Forever And Always.” “It wasn’t a country crowd,” one attendee tells us. “But it was crazy to see how well the audience responded. Everyone there knew every word to every song she sang. In that broad of an audience, seeing that was just amazing.” The show generated more than $1 million for the charity and also featured Timbaland, Ciara, Snoop Dogg, Alicia Keys, and the first performance in six years from R&B group TLC

tobyToby’s Greatest Honor: Un-televised and off most fans’ radar, it’s not the highest profile awards show by a long shot. But you’d never know it from Toby Keith’s reaction. “It’s the most prestigious thing that I’ve ever been given,” Toby said of his Songwriter/Artist of the Decade honor, presented at the 39th Anniversary Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Dinner & Induction Sunday (10/18). “To have your peers, songwriters who are the lifeblood of this industry, recognize you is unbelievable.” Taylor Swift, too, acknowledged the significance of the evening. “Songwriters are my heroes … and the fact that these are the people who vote on awards like this, and the fact that they would pick me, it really makes me happy,” she said of her Songwriter/Artist of the Year award. “I was signed to my first publishing deal when I was in 8th grade,” Swift said in her acceptance speech. “I would go to school then go home to write songs. I felt like I was living a double life like a spy.” Behind-the-scenes songwriters received the bulk of the attention, with Craig Wiseman (“The Good Stuff,” “Live Like You Were Dying,” “Love Me If You Can”) honored as Songwriter of the Decade. Brad Paisley’s “Waitin’ On A Woman” was named Song of the Year, with co-writer Wynn Varble earning Songwriter of the Year.

From this weekend….

Sacramento — Today Governor Schwarzenegger signed into law two historic LGBT rights bills — recognizing the contributions of slain civil rights leader Harvey Milk and a bill that underscores that same-sex couples married before the passage of Proposition 8 are entitled to full recognition as married spouses in California, regardless of whether they married in California or out of state. Both bills were sponsored by Equality California (EQCA) and were introduced by Senator Mark Leno (D-San Francisco). The bills were the top priority of EQCA, the state’s leading LGBT rights organization and were targeted by right wing anti-gay groups who worked to defeat the bills first in the legislature and then by urging the Governor to veto the measures.

“We are grateful to the Governor for signing these critical and groundbreaking measures into law and rising above partisan politics to improve the lives of LGBT Californians,” said EQCA Executive Director Geoff Kors.

The Harvey Milk Day bill marks the first time in the nation’s history that a state will officially recognize and celebrate the contributions of an openly LGBT person with an annual “day of special significance.”

“Californians will now learn about Harvey’s amazing contributions to the advancement of civil rights for decades to come,” Kors said. “He is a role model to millions, and this legislation will help ensure his legacy lives on forever.”

The Marriage Recognition and Family Protection Act, also signed today, holds that same-sex couples married before the passage of Proposition 8 must be recognized as married spouses in California, regardless of whether they married in California or in another state or nation. In addition, the new statute also confirms that same-sex couples married outside of California after November 5, 2008, must be given all of the rights, protections and responsibilities of married spouses under California law, with the sole exception of the designation of “marriage.”

“We are grateful that the Governor has signed this critical bill, which provides much needed protections for same-sex couples who have legally married out of state, or will in the future, and who deserve to be treated like any other married couple,” Kors said. “This bill will allow same-sex couples to get married in other states and countries and ensure they are treated equally under the law when they return to California. Ultimately, however, restoring the freedom to marry is the only way to ensure that all Californians receive the dignity and respect that comes with marriage.”

“When California offered marriage licenses to same-sex couples in 2008, spouses who were already married in another state or country were prohibited from re-marrying in California,” said Senator Leno. “Now those couples and their families are in limbo because their rights and protections under law are not clear. This new law will ensure that same-sex couples are protected by existing California law that recognizes all marriages equally, regardless of where they are performed.”

The Governor also signed EQCA-sponsored legislation by Assemblymember John A. Pérez to help leverage funding for same-sex domestic violence services and vetoed two bills on the grounds that existing law and policy already provided the protections the bills sought to put into statute: the Equal ID Act, allowing transgender people to obtain new birth certificates and the LGBT Prisoner Safety Act, considering sexual orientation and gender identity to safely house prisoners.

“While we believe it is important to have these protections in statute rather than just as policy or court precedent and are disappointed by the vetoes, the Governor’s reaffirmation of these policies will hopefully help ensure they are enforced,” Kors said.

Equality California (EQCA) is the largest statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender-rights advocacy organization in California. In the past decade, EQCA has strategically moved California from a state with extremely limited legal protections for LGBT individuals to a state with some of the most comprehensive civil-rights protections in the nation. EQCA has passed over 60 pieces of legislation and continues to advance equality through legislative advocacy, public education and community empowerment. www.eqca.org

brad Like Wife, Like Husband: Brad Paisley is following wife Kimberly Williams-Paisley’s (According To Jim) lead with a self-starring role and songwriting gig for next season’s CW drama Nashville. Paisley is teaming with One Tree Hill exec producer Mark Schwahn, Star Trek’s Zach Quinto and others to produce the show about a rising young female singing star and a male songwriter whose career is uncertain.

Fearless City Limits: Looks like Taylor Swift will get the final laugh on “Kanyegate” when she is her own musical guest as host of Saturday Night Live Nov. 7. “There are definitely some hilarious things that have happened to me over the past couple of months that I think will be pretty substantial skits,” Swift told the Associated Press Thursday (10/15). And no subject was off-limits for Swift’s three-part interview with Oprah Winfrey and teen guest correspondent Jordan Casner on Wednesday’s (10/14) Oprah Winfrey Show.
taylorbandSwift gave a behind-the-scenes tour of her Hendersonville, TN home, where she wrote hits “Our Song” and “Love Story” and a backstage look at her Fearless 2009 Tour. Swift even dished about her new condo and her crushes, or lack thereof. “As far as, ‘Do I have a guy in my life?’ No,” Swift said. “As far as having a boyfriend, I’ve never wanted to be in a relationship that I wasn’t 100% in.” A surprise for twins and über-fans Meg and Liz, and a performance of “Love Story” capped the busy week for Swift, who leads all artists with six nominations for the American Music Awards. She even bests Michael Jackson’s five posthumous nods. Other country stars up for awards include Jason Aldean, Darius Rucker, Keith Urban, Reba McEntire, Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts, Sugarland, Gloriana and Zac Brown Band.
