They’ve found Cadmium in the paint on these glasses and are recalling, oh, about 12 million of them. Check the McDonald’s website next week for refund details. For now, they are saying you should stop using them as cadmium is toxic

Turns out Whirlpool/Maytag has a big recall because of a fire hazard. It also turns out they make a ton of brands – The recall includes Maytag, Amana, Jenn-Air, Admiral, Magic Chef, Performa by Maytag and Crosley brand dishwashers with plastic tubs. The recalled dishwashers were made with black, bisque, white, silver and stainless steel front panels and sold at department and appliance stores nationwide from February 2006 through April 2010. They cost between $250 and $900.

If it’s one of the brands mentioned above, find the serial number, which is located inside the plastic tub on a tag near the left side of the door opening.

Models affected by the recall will have serial numbers starting with one of these sequences: NW39, NW40, NW41, NW42, NW43, NW44, NW45, NW46, NW47, NW48, NW49, NW50, NW51, NW52, NY01, NY02, NY03, NY04, NY05, NY06, NY07, NY08, NY09, NY10, NY11, NY12, NY13, NY14, NY15, NY16, NY17, NY18, NY19.

Or they will have serial numbers ending with one of these sequences: JC, JE, JG, JJ, JL, JN, JP, JR, JT, JV, JX, LA, LC, LE, LG, LJ, LL, LN, LP, LR, LT, LV, LX, NA, NC, NE, NG, NJ, NL, NN, NP, NR.

If your dishwasher’s serial number has either of these sequences, you should contact Maytag at (800) 544-5513 anytime or visit the company’s website at www.repair.maytag.com.

There is actually a way to help with the oil spill in the Gulf – if you have a shedder in the house, you can donate fur. Do you remember this came up with the spill here in the Bay a while back, too.

If you know a groomer, let them know that, according to petmd.com, “several groups are working hard to help clean up the oil creeping into Louisiana wetlands and threatening our beaches by employing pet hair’s natural oil-absorbing capabilities. Foremost among these is Matter of Trust, a San Francisco-based not-for-profit that specializes in repurposing castoff materials to ‘mimic how Mother Nature integrates enduring cycles and provides access to necessities in abundance.’

It’s kind of cool. More so when you consider that by stuffing used pantyhose with unwanted pet hair, we can help blunt the hit our coastlines will inevitably endure as a result of this spill. Sausage-like ‘booms’ of pet hair encased in tights and hose already line the coast up in the northern reaches of the panhandle.
And more is needed. Much more. Which is why groomers, animal hospitals and individuals are asked to participate by shipping bags or boxes of pet hair and donated pantyhose to one of Matter of Trust’s Gulf Coast warehouses. “

So that even if you live in the Bay Area, you and your pet can contribute to the disaster, too.

There’s been some horrible storms and flash flooding this weekend in Tennessee (yup, Nashville, too) and Mississippi and it sounds like it’s not done yet – here’s a link to the Nashville Red Cross if you want to contribute  to help in Tennessee, or the national Red Cross to help where ever it’s most needed.
