Toby’s Honor

Toby’s Greatest Honor: Un-televised and off most fans’ radar, it’s not the highest profile awards show by a long shot. But you’d never know it from Toby Keith’s reaction. “It’s the most prestigious thing that I’ve ever been given,” Toby said of his Songwriter/Artist of the Decade honor, presented at the 39th Anniversary Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Dinner & Induction Sunday (10/18). “To have your peers, songwriters who are the lifeblood of this industry, recognize you is unbelievable.” Taylor Swift, too, acknowledged the significance of the evening. “Songwriters are my heroes … and the fact that these are the people who vote on awards like this, and the fact that they would pick me, it really makes me happy,” she said of her Songwriter/Artist of the Year award. “I was signed to my first publishing deal when I was in 8th grade,” Swift said in her acceptance speech. “I would go to school then go home to write songs. I felt like I was living a double life like a spy.” Behind-the-scenes songwriters received the bulk of the attention, with Craig Wiseman (“The Good Stuff,” “Live Like You Were Dying,” “Love Me If You Can”) honored as Songwriter of the Decade. Brad Paisley’s “Waitin’ On A Woman” was named Song of the Year, with co-writer Wynn Varble earning Songwriter of the Year.
